Chapter 78: Who’s Training Whom?
Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Who’s Training Whom?
Wang Lu watched Fu Cheng, his face full of wariness.
Fu Xiaoxiao chuckled and beckoned at Wang Lu. "Xiao Lu, take a guess who he is?"
Wang Lu sized Fu Cheng up for quite a while. Hearing Fu Xiaoxiao’s words, he tried hard to match the man in front of him with someone he knew, but couldn’t connect him to anyone in his mind.
"Sis-in-law, who is this? How come he’s at your place?"
Since Wang Lu couldn’t place the man in front of him, he could only turn to Fu Xiaoxiao for help.
Lin Qiu and Lin Xue were both here, so it didn’t look like he had anything shady going on with Fu Xiaoxiao.
"Hmph." Fu Cheng glanced at Wang Lu and let out a soft snort.
Seeing that disdainful look, Wang Lu suddenly remembered the wild man he’d seen on the mountain with Lin Qiu before.
But... could the man in front of him really be that wild man?
"Sister Lin Qiu, is... is he that..." Wang Lu looked at Lin Qiu, lowering his voice to ask.
"It’s him." Lin Qiu nodded with a smile when she heard him. "Let me introduce you. This is Fu Cheng. Right now he’s going by the identity of Xiaoxiao’s cousin."
"He... he, how is he here?" Wang Lu pointed at Fu Cheng in shock. Shouldn’t he be up in the mountains?
"Well... it’s kind of a long story." Fu Xiaoxiao smiled and had Wang Lu sit down.
"Listen to me, here’s how it went..." Wang Lu sat down still a bit dazed. Seeing he hadn’t come back to his senses, Lin Xue told him the whole story of how Fu Cheng came down the mountain.
"So he chased Sister Lin Qiu all the way to the army base?" Once Wang Lu understood, he realized this guy had come down the mountain for the sake of chasing his wife?
"You could put it that way." Fu Xiaoxiao nodded objectively. That was the clearest, most straightforward explanation.
Lin Qiu’s cheeks flushed. She lowered her head, too embarrassed to meet Fu Cheng’s blatantly direct gaze.
"So now he’s become Sis-in-law’s cousin?" Wang Lu finally connected the dots and understood why Fu Cheng had ended up as the ’cousin.’
"Mm. He needs an identity, something that explains why he’s here." Fu Xiaoxiao answered. "Sister Qiu and Xiao Xue are single women. We can’t exactly say he’s related to them—it’s much more convenient to use me."
Fu Xiaoxiao continued slowly. "I’ve cut ties with my family. Him being my distant cousin is something people will accept."
"So that’s how it is." Wang Lu got it and didn’t ask anything more.
"No wonder they sent me over. Turns out it’s for this." Wang Lu finally understood why Liu Hongjun had told him to come deal with this. He really was the best person for the job.
He knew about how special Lu Feng was, and he also knew Fu Cheng, so he could cover for him perfectly.
"The higher-ups want him to train with me. I’ll temporarily be his coach and teach him how things work in the army." Only now did Wang Lu explain his purpose in coming to Fu Xiaoxiao and the others.
"You’re the one Uncle Liu sent?" Fu Xiaoxiao’s eyes lit up. Did this mean Liu Hongjun was thinking of taking Fu Cheng in?
"Yeah." Wang Lu nodded with a smile.
"That’s great." Lin Qiu and Lin Xue clasped their hands together in delight.
Fu Cheng’s expression stayed indifferent, as if it had nothing to do with him.
Lin Qiu patted him with a smile. "You’d better perform well. Don’t let them down."
"Mm." Fu Cheng gave Fu Xiaoxiao a glance. This person counted as a good one.
"Then shall we go?" Wang Lu called out to Fu Cheng. Fu Cheng nodded, stood up, and got ready to leave with him.
"You’re going out with me dressed like that? Don’t you have any other clothes?" Wang Lu froze for a second when he saw Fu Cheng heading out in just his undershirt and hurriedly stopped him.
"That’s all he has..." Fu Xiaoxiao pointed to the pile of fur in the corner. The reason people called him the wild man was because he used to wear nothing but animal skins.
A wild man through and through.
"Then wait here for me a bit! I’ll go get you two sets of clothes." Wang Lu scratched his head, asked Fu Cheng to wait, and ran out.
After a short while, they saw Wang Lu run back in, arms full of two sets of clothes.
"Try these on. You look about the same build as Mr. Lu, so I took his size." Wang Lu handed the clothes to Fu Cheng, who took them and simply pulled them on.
Fu Xiaoxiao and the others watched as the wild man, in the blink of an eye, turned into a straight-backed, powerfully built officer.
It was even more startling than before.
"He really does look the part now!" Fu Xiaoxiao nudged the stunned Lin Qiu and Lin Xue with her shoulder, laughing.
"You look good." Lin Qiu stepped up with a smile to straighten his clothes and fasten his belt. "You look a lot more spirited now."
"Seriously, clothes do make the man." Looking at Lin Qiu and Fu Cheng standing together, Lin Xue thought they really did match well.
If he could genuinely rely on his own ability to support her sister, she honestly wouldn’t oppose them being together.
"Let’s go! I’ll test your basics today." Wang Lu was here with a mission, so he took Fu Cheng and headed out.
As Fu Cheng was about to go out the door, Lin Qiu gently reminded him, "Don’t lose your temper. Listen to him."
"Okay." Fu Cheng nodded and ran off after Wang Lu.
"Things will get better from now on. He’s not stupid—he knows what’s good for him." Fu Xiaoxiao patted the emotional Lin Qiu. She’d suffered so much before; now that she was far away from that scumbag and his family, life would only keep getting better.
"Mm." Lin Qiu wiped away the tears at the corner of her eyes.
Time ticked by bit by bit. Lin Qiu glanced toward the door from time to time, but still there was no sign of Fu Cheng coming back.
When Lu Lin came home from school, he saw the strangers in the house and gave them a wary look, then went to find Fu Xiaoxiao, who was cooking in the kitchen.
"Mrs. Fu, who are they?" Lu Lin tugged at Fu Xiaoxiao’s clothes and asked.
"Oh, that’s Auntie Lin Qiu and Auntie Lin Xue. They’re my friends and are visiting. Go say hi to them later." Fu Xiaoxiao introduced them to Lu Lin with a smile.
"Hi there! I’m Lin Xue, and this is my sister, Lin Qiu." Lin Xue came in with a smile and introduced herself.
"Hello." Lu Lin moved a bit closer to Fu Xiaoxiao’s side. Though he was a little uncomfortable, he still nodded obediently in greeting.
"Dinner’s almost ready. We’ll eat soon, and after that I’ll help you with your homework." Fu Xiaoxiao ruffled Lu Lin’s hair. Lu Lin nodded.
He felt that the teachers at school didn’t explain as well as Fu Xiaoxiao. When she explained something once, he got it. At school the teachers talked very fast, and sometimes he just couldn’t understand.
But with Fu Xiaoxiao giving him extra help after school, he’d already started to slowly catch up with the others.
Once Fu Xiaoxiao finished cooking, Wang Lu finally came back with Fu Cheng.
But when they saw the two of them, Fu Xiaoxiao and the others raised their brows in puzzlement.
"Who was being trained? Why is Xiao Lu soaked in sweat from head to toe while Fu Cheng just has a bit of sweat on his forehead?" Fu Xiaoxiao voiced everyone’s question. They were supposed to be training him, but it looked more like Fu Cheng had been training Wang Lu.
"Sis-in-law, give me some water..." Wang Lu panted from exhaustion, begging for a drink.
Lin Xue hurried to the kitchen to pour him a cup of water. Wang Lu gave her a grateful look, lifted the cup, and downed it in one go.
"Whew... I’m finally alive again." Only then did Wang Lu slowly let out a long breath.
"What on earth happened to you?" Seeing him like this, Fu Xiaoxiao was even more curious.
