Chapter 60: Chapter 60: A Family of Orphans
"Ahem, are you done?" Lu Feng’s light cough interrupted Fu Xiaoxiao’s burgeoning thoughts, and her eyes came back to clarity.
"Yes, you rest now!" Fu Xiaoxiao gathered her things and immediately turned around to flee the room.
Lu Feng watched her retreating figure as if she were escaping, his eyes glowing faintly in the darkness.
He once thought that anyone approaching her wouldn’t elicit any reaction from him, but the recently tensed body broke that notion.
As long as she got close, he could scent a fragrance, and his body would react involuntarily.
Fu Xiaoxiao returned to her room and patted her face.
"Don’t think about it, he’s your boss! No matter how good, you can’t touch!"
Fu Xiaoxiao cleared her mind, trying to focus on her new clothes.
After drawing all the guidelines, Fu Xiaoxiao took out the scissors and cut them out one by one, placing them accordingly.
After finishing the clothes for four people, it was already nine o’clock. Fu Xiaoxiao quickly put things aside and went to bed.
The next morning, Wang Lu arrived early. Fu Xiaoxiao made them breakfast, and after they finished eating, Wang Lu personally took Lu Lin to school.
Lu Lin glanced at the wolf pup in his arms and reluctantly handed it over to Fu Xiaoxiao.
The little wolf cub, still young, sniffed Fu Xiaoxiao’s scent continuously as if trying to memorize her scent.
Fu Xiaoxiao took out some medicine and cleaned its wound, reapplying the ointment.
The little wolf cub whimpered in pain. Fu Xiaoxiao watched it hurt clearly but made no attempt to attack her.
She petted the wolf cub’s head. "You’re a smart one, knowing we’re helping you."
"Xiao Chen, I’m leaving the little one to you." Fu Xiaoxiao smiled and placed the bandaged wolf cub back in its box, entrusting it to the eager Lu Chen nearby.
Lu Chen, not knowing what to do, mimicked Lu Lin’s actions from last night, holding it in his arms and gently stroking its back.
Sure enough, under Lu Chen’s soothing, the wolf cub gradually calmed down and fell asleep in Lu Chen’s embrace.
Lu Chen looked at Fu Xiaoxiao joyfully, waiting for her praise.
Fu Xiaoxiao smiled, holding a glass of water, walked into the room. Lu Feng was still asleep. Fu Xiaoxiao slowly approached him.
Watching him with his eyes closed, sunlight from the window fell on his face, highlighting his chiseled, handsome features like a work of art.
Under his high, straight nose, his thin lips were slightly pressed together, with firm lines, conveying a lingering sharpness even in sleep.
Carefully placing the glass of water nearby, Fu Xiaoxiao intended to reach out and wake Lu Feng. Before her hand could touch him, Lu Feng suddenly grabbed her wrist, about to twist her hand off, Fu Xiaoxiao followed his force and turned away, shouting.
"Lu Feng!"
Her shout jolted Lu Feng from his dream, and upon seeing Fu Xiaoxiao pinned underneath him, he quickly released his grip.
"Sorry, when I’m asleep, it’s best not to come near me." Lu Feng looked apologetically at Fu Xiaoxiao. His long-standing vigilance had become ingrained in his body, and generally, no one dared approach him in his sleep.
"It’s not your fault; I shouldn’t have touched you." Fu Xiaoxiao shook her head. She should have known better—it was indeed careless of her.
She’d forgotten he was a soldier, naturally alert to approaching unfamiliar scents.
"Are you okay?" Lu Feng looked at Fu Xiaoxiao worriedly, regretting he might have hurt her.
"I’m fine." Fu Xiaoxiao shook her head. Luckily, she reacted in time, twisting in the direction of his force, resulting in just a muscle strain, nothing serious.
If she’d been a bit slower, her hand would definitely be swollen like a pig’s trotter now.
"I’m sorry." Although Fu Xiaoxiao was fine, Lu Feng felt a bit uneasy nonetheless.
"Go wash your face, it’s time to change the dressing." Fu Xiaoxiao brought the water over, prompting Lu Feng to wash his face quickly.
After Lu Feng washed his face, Fu Xiaoxiao had already prepared the materials for changing the dressing. Lu Feng unbuttoned his shirt, and Fu Xiaoxiao removed the gauze.
"The wound has reopened," Fu Xiaoxiao frowned, guessing Lu Feng’s recent large movements had torn it, causing another rupture.
"It’s fine; the other areas have scabbed over; it’s not a big issue." Lu Feng glanced at the wound and nonchalantly dismissed it.
If it were before, he would’ve gone back to training already; staying at home for just this skin-deep injury would be laughable if others found out.
"Do you always have such disregard for life?" Fu Xiaoxiao cleaned the blood off the wound with medicine, unable to resist asking after hearing Lu Feng’s dismissive words.
"... Used to being on my own," Lu Feng caught the hint of anger in Fu Xiaoxiao’s tone and explained.
He had always been alone, with no family, so no one stopped him from getting hurt. Even when he did get hurt, he’d lick his wounds alone, not burdening others.
A loner, he’d grown accustomed to it.
"And your family?" Fu Xiaoxiao looked up at Lu Feng and asked.
"... I was found by the commander in the snow. If not for him, I’d probably have frozen to death. To abandon such a small child in the icy wilderness, I guess... they didn’t want me." Lu Feng lowered his eyes, hiding the indifference within.
"Why are you so sure you were abandoned? What if you were just a mischievous child who got lost?" Fu Xiaoxiao wrapped the gauze, not blaming Lu Feng for his self-neglect.
He genuinely believed he was abandoned, a child discarded by others. Nobody needed him, and nobody would care for his injuries, accustomed to swallowing his pain alone.
"The commander said I was wearing scanty clothing, meaning they didn’t intend for me to survive," Lu Feng looked at Fu Xiaoxiao, already convinced of his answer.
"It’s okay, you’re not the only orphan in this home; we all are," Fu Xiaoxiao chuckled lightly, teasing. "We’re just a bunch of homeless orphans, gathering together just right. We’re all the same, no one looks down on another."
"I must say, I find your words comforting." Lu Feng’s lips curled into a smile, surprisingly soothed by her statement.
When he decided to adopt Lu Lin and Lu Chen initially, it was partly due to what Fu Xiaoxiao voiced. He understood the hardship of wandering without a home, children without a mother’s protection, like wild grass, only to survive resiliently, unyielding to the storms.
"Right! I think it’s quite nice." Fu Xiaoxiao laughed, dissipating a lingering shadow of negativity.
"Are you genuinely okay with them not calling you mother?" Lu Feng looked at Fu Xiaoxiao, concerned she might be saddened.
"If a woman suddenly claimed she’s your mother and asked you to call her mom, could you do it?" Fu Xiaoxiao exemplified.
"... Probably wouldn’t be able to," Lu Feng shook his head.
"That’s exactly how Lu Lin feels. I’m like the sudden mom that appeared, abrupt in asking them to call me ’mom,’" Fu Xiaoxiao explained. "I want them to call me ’mom’ willingly, not constrained by various reasons."
