Chapter 322 - 322: Rest Day (3)

  • Next Chapter

The final day of Tristan Herrera's vacation was meant to be a true rest day. He had no plans to leave his house, no buses to catch, and no long walking tours through the historic streets of Manila.

He woke up late, around nine in the morning, feeling completely refreshed. The deep, heavy soreness in his muscles had finally disappeared. His body felt light, energetic, and fully healed. When he checked his internal blue system interface, it showed a very satisfying status report.

[System Status: Optimal]

[Physical Recovery: 100% Complete]

[Muscle Fatigue: 0%]

[Notice: Rest Mode will terminate in 20 Hours. Training Phase will resume tomorrow.]

Tristan smiled as he sat on the edge of his bed. Tomorrow, the holiday would be completely over. He would have to pack his heavy bags again, leave his peaceful home in Dasmariñas, and head straight to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig for the official U-18 Asian Cup training camp. The real war against the best teams in Asia was about to begin.

But today was still his day.

He walked into the kitchen, wrapped in a loose t-shirt and shorts. His mother, Linda, had already left the house to buy groceries, and his father, Armando, was out driving his tricycle for the morning passenger rush. The house was completely quiet and peaceful.

Tristan cooked himself a simple breakfast of fried eggs and garlic rice. He sat down at the small dining table, enjoying the quiet morning. But the peace did not last very long.

Suddenly, his smartphone on the table began to buzz violently. It vibrated across the wooden surface, flashing with multiple notifications.

Tristan picked it up. He had a group voice call invitation on a messaging app. The names on the screen made him laugh immediately: Marco "The Flash" Gumaba and Gab "The Wall" Lagman.

He pressed the green button and put the phone to his ear.

"Finally! The captain answers his phone!" Marco's loud, energetic voice blasted through the speaker so loudly that Tristan had to pull the phone away from his ear. "Bro, where have you been? We have been spamming you for thirty minutes!"

"I was eating breakfast, Marco," Tristan laughed, leaning back in his chair. "Some of us like to enjoy a quiet morning. Why are you calling so early? Aren't you supposed to be resting your legs?"

"I am resting my legs!" Marco shouted. "My body is currently glued to my bed. But my fingers are wide awake and ready for war. Gab is here too. Say hello, big guy."

"Good morning, Cap," Gab's deep, rumbling voice came through the phone. He sounded like he was currently chewing on something. "Don't listen to Marco. He's just bored because his social media notifications finally slowed down."

"Hey! That is a lie!" Marco protested. "Listen, Tristan, today is our last day of freedom. Tomorrow we go back to BGC and Coach Baldomero is going to run us until we throw up. We need to do some team bonding right now. Open your phone. Log into Mobile Legends. We need a solid roamer to carry us to Mythic rank!"

Tristan chuckled. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang was the most popular mobile video game in the Philippines. Almost every teenager played it, including the members of the national basketball team. Whenever they had free time at the training dormitory, they would sit in a circle and play together on their phones.

"I don't know, boys," Tristan teased, looking at his empty plate. "I was planning to just watch a movie and do nothing today."

"Come on, Cap!" Marco begged. "We are on a three-game losing streak because our random teammates keep throwing the game! We need the Architect! We need your big brain to shot-call the map! Gab keeps dying in the gold lane because he plays too aggressive!"

"I am a tank player, Marco," Gab defended himself calmly. "You told me to clear the wave. It's not my fault the enemy assassin was hiding in the bushes."

Tristan shook his head, a warm feeling of camaraderie filling his chest. Even when they weren't on a real basketball court, his best friends still acted exactly the same.

"Alright, alright," Tristan said, standing up to wash his plate in the sink. "Give me five minutes to wash my dishes. Open the lobby and send me the invite. But we are only playing three games, okay? I have plans later this afternoon."

"Yes! The captain is in!" Marco cheered. "Hurry up, bro! I am picking my hyper-carry hero right now!"

Five minutes later, Tristan sat comfortably on his living room sofa, holding his phone horizontally. He opened the game app, and the familiar fantasy music started to play. He quickly accepted the lobby invitation from Marco.

On the screen, their three profiles lined up. Marco's avatar was a cartoon ninja, Gab's avatar was a picture of a heavy concrete wall, and Tristan's avatar was a simple black basketball.

They started the matchmaking queue, and within five seconds, the game found an opponent. The hero selection phase began.

"Alright, look at their draft," Tristan said, his natural leadership instincts instantly kicking in as he analyzed the enemy team's characters. "They have a lot of crowd control and high burst damage. Gab, do not pick a squishy character. We need a heavy frontliner who can absorb the damage."

"Don't worry, Cap," Gab said through the voice chat. "I am picking Tigreal. I will be the shield, just like in the paint."

"Perfect," Tristan nodded. "Marco, what are you picking?"

"Gusion, bro! I am going to slice them up in the jungle!" Marco said confidently. "Watch my micro-mechanics, Tristan. I am going to get a Maniac in the first five minutes!"

"Just don't chase them into their tower, Marco," Tristan warned wisely. "Play safe. I will pick a roaming mage support. I will control the vision in the river so they can't surprise us."

The game loaded, and the battle began.

Even though it was just a mobile phone video game, Tristan's unique mind worked the exact same way it did during a real basketball game. His brain treated the digital map like a basketball court. He constantly checked the mini-map every two seconds, calculating the enemy jungle patterns, estimating the cooldown timers of their abilities, and predicting where the next team fight would happen.

"Gab, step into the bush on the right," Tristan shot-called calmly. "The enemy mid-laner is missing. They are trying to gank our gold lane. Wait for my signal."

"Understood," Gab replied. His digital character moved silently into the grass, hiding from view.

A few seconds later, two enemy characters stepped out of the jungle, trying to attack Marco's position.

"Now, Gab! Use your ultimate ability!" Tristan commanded.

"Boom!" Gab shouted through the phone as his character slammed his massive hammer into the ground, pulling all the enemy heroes into a single spot, freezing them in place.

"My turn!" Marco yelled excitedly. His fingers moved across his phone screen like lightning. His character dashed forward, throwing a shower of magical daggers that instantly deleted the enemy heroes' health bars.

[Double Kill!] the game announcer's voice echoed loudly from their phone speakers.

"Hahaha! Did you see that?" Marco flexed proudly through the voice chat. "Clean mechanics! I told you I am the king of the jungle!"

"Good job, Marco. But don't get greedy," Tristan said calmly, his eyes scanning the top lane. "The enemy turtle monster is spawning in ten seconds. Gab, secure the area. Marco, finish your jungle buff and let's take the objective. We need the team shield."

They played with perfect coordination. Tristan's strategic shot-calling, combined with Gab's disciplined defense and Marco's aggressive scoring power, completely destroyed the enemy team. It was the exact same dynamic they used to win the gold medal in Thailand.

By the end of the third game, the word VICTORY flashed proudly across their screens in large, golden letters. They had won all three matches easily.

"Man, playing with Tristan is like using a cheat code," Marco sighed happily, his character reaching the high Mythic rank. "You always know where the enemy is hiding, bro. Are you sure you don't have a map-hack installed in your brain?"

Tristan smirked softly to himself. If you only knew about the system in my head, he thought.

"It's just basic logic, Marco," Tristan said aloud. "Anyway, that's three games. I have to go now."

"Aww, come on, just one more!" Marco pleaded.

"No can do, bro," Tristan smiled. "I have to get ready. I am meeting Claire at five o'clock."

"Ohhh, the girlfriend!" Marco began to tease him, making kissing noises through the microphone. "Alright, alright, go ahead, Cap. Don't keep the lady waiting. We will see you tomorrow morning at the BGC facility. Make sure you bring your heavy bags."

"See you tomorrow, Cap," Gab said warmly. "Enjoy your dinner."

"Thanks, brothers. See you tomorrow," Tristan said, closing the game app and locking his phone.

He stood up from the sofa and stretched his arms. The gaming session had been a fun, relaxing break, but now it was time for the most important part of his final rest day.

At exactly 5:00 PM, the afternoon sun was beginning to lower over Dasmariñas, turning the sky into a soft, golden yellow. The air was cool and pleasant as Tristan walked toward the small commercial complex near the center of the city.

He didn't wear his baseball cap today. He just wore a clean, dark green polo shirt and casual khaki shorts. He stood near the entrance of a popular shopping mall, waiting patiently.

A few minutes later, he saw a familiar figure running toward him from across the parking lot.

It was Claire. She was wearing a beautiful light blue dress, and her long hair was bouncing as she ran. She didn't have her heavy canvas art bag today. She only carried a small, simple purse. Her face was radiating absolute happiness, and a massive, beautiful smile covered her face.

"Tristan!" she shouted, waving her hand high in the air.

Tristan smiled widely and stepped forward. Before he could even say hello, Claire leaped forward and threw her arms tightly around his neck. She was laughing with pure joy.

"Whoa!" Tristan laughed happily, catching her easily and wrapping his strong arms around her waist, spinning her around once. "I guess the presentation went well?"

Claire pulled back, her eyes shining with absolute excitement. She was breathing slightly fast from running.

"It didn't just go well, Tristan! It went perfectly!" she gasped, holding his hands tightly. "I got a flat 4.0 grade! That is the highest possible grade in the entire university!"

"Wow," Tristan whispered, his chest swelling with incredible pride. He leaned down and gave her a long, loving hug. "I knew it. I told you that you could do it, Claire. You are the best artist in that school."

"You were right, Tristan," Claire said softly, her voice full of deep gratitude as they began to walk hand-in-hand toward the mall entrance. "When I stood in front of the classroom today, my hands were shaking so badly. The head professor looked so mean and strict. He didn't smile at all when I pulled the cloth off my canvas."

"What did he say when he saw the painting?" Tristan asked, deeply interested.

"At first, he didn't say anything for a whole minute," Claire explained, her fingers squeezing his tightly. "He just stood up, walked very close to the painting, and stared at the dark background and the glowing gold streak right in the center. The whole room was completely silent. I thought he was going to fail me."

"And then?"

"Then, he turned around to the class and started clapping!" Claire beamed, her face blushing with happiness. "He said my painting had the most powerful use of contrast he had seen in years. He told everyone that the gold streak felt alive, like a real spark of hope breaking through a dark storm. He asked me where I got the inspiration, and I told him... I got it from watching a champion fight through the darkness."

Claire looked up at Tristan, her eyes full of love. "Thank you, Tristan. If you hadn't taken me to the museum yesterday and talked to me at the park, I would have changed my painting at the last minute. Your words gave me the courage to trust my heart."

Tristan smiled warmly, his thumb gently rubbing the back of her hand. "You did all the hard work, Claire. I just reminded you of how amazing you already are. Now, come on. A massive success like this deserves a massive celebration."

"Yes!" Claire cheered, her eyes lighting up. "You promised! We are eating Samgyupsal!"

They walked into Romantic Babidi, a highly popular Korean barbecue buffet restaurant located inside the mall. It was Claire's absolute favorite place to eat.

The restaurant was lively and smelled incredibly delicious. Every wooden table had a round, silver grill built into the center, with a long metal exhaust pipe hanging from the ceiling to suck away the smoke. The sound of sizzling meat filled the air, along with upbeat Korean pop music playing from the speakers.

The waiter led them to a quiet table near the back. Within minutes, the table was completely covered in small white bowls containing various side dishes, known as banchan. There was spicy cabbage kimchi, sweet marinating potatoes, sweet corn with cheese, fish cakes, and a large basket of fresh, crisp green lettuce leaves.

A large plate of thin, beautiful slices of raw pork belly—samgyeopsal—and marinated beef was placed next to the grill.

"Let the MVP do the cooking tonight," Tristan smiled, grabbing the metal tongs and scissors.

He laid the pink strips of meat onto the hot silver grill. "Ssssssss!" The meat sizzled instantly, releasing a wonderful, savory aroma. Tristan flipped the meat carefully, waiting until the edges turned a perfect, crispy golden-brown.

Claire watched him with a happy smile, resting her chin on her hands. She took a small bowl of melted cheese and placed it on the edge of the grill to keep it warm and gooey.

"Eat up, champion," Tristan said, cutting the cooked beef into bite-sized pieces with the scissors and placing them directly onto her plate. "You earned this."

Claire didn't hesitate. She took a large, fresh green lettuce leaf, placed a piece of crispy pork belly inside, added a spoonful of rice, a slice of kimchi, and dipped the whole wrap into the warm, melted cheese. She popped the massive wrap into her mouth all at once.

She chewed happily, her eyes closing in food paradise. "Oh my gosh... this is heaven. I have been thinking about this flavor during my entire three-hour exam today."

Tristan laughed softly, enjoying the sight of her being so happy. He made a wrap for himself, enjoying the rich, savory taste of the beef mixed with the spicy kick of the kimchi. They ate heartily, ordering round after round of premium beef and pork.

For the first hour, the conversation was full of laughter and joy. They talked about her classmates' reactions, the funny comments from her strict professor, and how she was going to frame her painting.

But as the dinner slowly came to an end and the waiter cleared away the empty plates, leaving only the warm, ticking sound of the cooling grill, the atmosphere around the table shifted slightly. A gentle, sweet sadness entered the air.

Tristan looked at Claire across the table. The warm yellow light of the restaurant shined softly on her face.

"I am really going to miss you, Claire," Tristan said quietly, his voice full of genuine emotion.

Claire's smile softened, her eyes turning slightly nostalgic. She reached across the table and placed her hand over his. "I am going to miss you too, Tristan. It feels like you just got back from Thailand yesterday, and now you have to leave again."

Tristan sighed softly, looking down at their joined hands. "Yeah. Tomorrow morning, the service car is picking me up at seven o'clock. We are heading straight to the BGC facility. Coach said the training camp for the Asian Cup will be twice as hard as the last one. We will be locked inside the dormitory for the next few weeks. No outside visitors, no long breaks."

He looked back up into her eyes. "I won't be able to visit you here in Dasmariñas for a while."

Claire smiled gently, squeezing his fingers. There was no anger or disappointment in her face. There was only absolute understanding and unwavering support.

"I understand, Tristan," she said softly. "You don't need to feel guilty. You are the captain of the country's team. You have a massive responsibility on your shoulders. The whole nation is watching you, and I know how much you want to reach that U-18 World Cup."

She leaned forward slightly, her eyes locking onto his with fierce confidence.

"I am an artist, Tristan. I know what it takes to create a masterpiece. It takes hours of isolation, pain, and hard work in the studio. Basketball is your art. The court is your canvas. Go to BGC tomorrow, practice hard, listen to your coach, and build your masterpiece with your teammates."

Tristan felt a massive wave of emotion rush through his chest. He felt incredibly lucky. Many athletes struggled because their partners did not understand the heavy time demands of professional sports. But Claire understood him completely. She didn't hold him back; she pushed him forward.

"Thank you, Claire," Tristan said, his voice thick with sincere emotion. "Your words mean everything to me. Every time I feel like collapsing during the heavy conditioning drills, I will think of you. I will practice hard so that when you watch me on the television during the Asian Cup, you will be proud."

"I am already proud of you, Tristan," Claire smiled warmly, a tiny tear forming at the corner of her eye, though she quickly wiped it away with a happy laugh. "Now, promise me one thing."

"Anything," Tristan nodded without hesitation.

"Call me every night before you go to sleep in the dormitory," Claire said, her eyes twinkling. "Even if you are completely exhausted, even if it's just for five minutes. I want to hear your voice."

"I promise," Tristan said solemnly. "I will call you every single night, no matter what."

They left the restaurant around eight-thirty in the evening. The mall was closing, and the cool night air of Dasmariñas welcomed them as they stepped outside.

Tristan walked Claire back to her house. The walk was slow and quiet. They didn't speak many words, enjoying the simple, comforting feeling of holding hands under the stars one last time.

When they reached her front gate, Claire turned around to face him.

"This is it," she said softly, a beautiful, hopeful smile on her face. "Go get that Asian Cup, Captain."

"I will," Tristan smiled back. He stepped closer, wrapped his arms around her waist, and brought her into a deep, tender hug. He leaned down and kissed her lips gently. It was a sweet, lingering goodbye kiss, full of unspoken promises and deep love.

"Goodnight, Tristan. Drive safely tomorrow," Claire whispered against his cheek.

"Goodnight, Claire. I love you."

"I love you too."

Tristan watched as she walked through her gate and entered her brightly lit house. When the front door finally closed, he turned around and began the walk back to his own home.

As he walked under the quiet streetlights of his neighborhood, Tristan took a deep, focused breath. He felt his entire mindset changing. The lazy, peaceful holiday was officially over. The human relaxation period had served its purpose. His body was completely recovered, his mind was clear, and his heart was fully resolved.

He opened his internal blue interface as he reached his front door.

Tristan looked at the flashing blue text in his mind, his eyes turning cold, sharp, and incredibly determined. The Architect was finally waking up.

"Let's do this," Tristan whispered fiercely to the empty night sky.

He stepped inside his house, ready to pack his bags, ready to leave his comfort zone, and ready to lead the Philippines against the absolute giants of the basketball world.
