Chapter 318 - 318: The Heroes' Return
Ninoy Aquino International Airport - Manila, Philippines
6:00 PM
The heavy wheels of the massive commercial airplane hit the concrete runway with a loud, sudden thump.
Inside the cabin, the moment the plane safely touched down, all the Filipino passengers started clapping loudly. It was a proud, happy tradition for Filipinos coming back to their home country. Tristan Herrera opened his eyes and looked out the small window.
The sun was just starting to set over the busy city of Manila. The sky was a beautiful mix of bright orange, deep pink, and soft purple. Below, the thousands of city lights were slowly turning on, glowing like tiny stars in the twilight.
"Welcome home, ladies and gentlemen," the pilot's voice echoed through the airplane speakers. "The local time is exactly six o'clock in the evening. On behalf of the flight crew, we would like to officially congratulate the Philippine Under-18 National Basketball Team for bringing home the gold medal. Mabuhay!"
The passengers clapped again, turning in their seats to smile at the players in their navy blue jackets.
Marco Gumaba stretched his arms high into the air and let out a loud, happy sigh. "Finally! My legs have been cramped in this seat for hours. Give me some real space, man!"
"You slept the entire flight, Marco," Joco Palencia laughed from the seat across the aisle. "Do not complain. I am just happy to be back on solid ground."
Tristan smiled as he reached under his seat and pulled out his carry-on backpack. He unzipped the main pocket just a little bit and peeked inside. The heavy gold medal was resting safely inside. He patted the bag gently and stood up as the seatbelt sign turned off.
"Alright, team!" Coach Dante Baldomero called out from the front of the cabin. "Stay together! Make sure you have all your passports and your carry-on bags. Let's go get our luggage and go home!"
Walking through the airport terminals felt like walking in a dream. The boys were tired, but the excitement of being home gave them a sudden burst of energy. They quickly passed through the immigration counters, showing their passports to the smiling officers who congratulated them one by one.
They walked down to the baggage claim area. The huge conveyor belts were spinning slowly, dropping heavy suitcases onto the metal track.
Tristan waited patiently until he saw his dark gray hard-shell suitcase. He grabbed the handle and pulled it off the belt. He laid it flat on the floor and quickly opened the zipper just an inch to check inside. The soft team hoodie was still perfectly wrapped around his glass MVP trophy. It was safe.
"Everyone got their bags?" Gab Lagman asked. His massive hands were easily carrying two huge suitcases.
"Got mine!" Aiden Robinson shouted.
"We are all good, Coach!" Tristan reported, zipping his bag back up and standing tall.
Coach Baldomero nodded. He looked at his young players. They looked like warriors returning from a long, tiring war. They had dark circles under their eyes, and some of them still had visible bruises on their arms from the physical game against Indonesia. But their heads were held high.
"Listen to me before we walk through those doors," Coach Baldomero said, pointing to the frosted glass sliding doors that led to the public arrival area. "Your families are waiting for you out there. The media is waiting for you out there. Put your jackets on properly. Put your gold medals around your necks. Walk out there like the champions you are."
Tristan unzipped his backpack and pulled out the thick gold medal. He placed the colorful ribbon over his head, letting the heavy gold circle rest proudly against his chest. He watched as Gab, Joco, Marco, and the rest of his brothers did the same.
"Ready, Cap?" Joco asked, a nervous but excited smile on his face.
Tristan took a deep breath. "Let's go."
The moment the glass sliding doors opened, a wall of pure sound hit them.
"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
"PHILIPPINES! PHILIPPINES! PHILIPPINES!"
The arrival hall was completely packed. There were hundreds of people standing behind the metal barricades. Some of them were regular fans, but most of them were the families, friends, and relatives of the players. They were holding up huge, colorful banners made of cardboard and paint.
WELCOME HOME CHAMPIONS!
WE LOVE YOU GAB! THE WALL!
TRISTAN HERRERA MVP!
Balloons in the colors of the Philippine flag—red, blue, white, and yellow—were floating everywhere. The security guards had to link their arms together to keep the excited crowd from rushing forward.
Tristan's eyes immediately scanned the sea of faces. He was looking for two specific people.
Suddenly, he saw her.
Standing right at the front of the barricade, wearing his old white high school jersey, was Claire. Next to her, holding a small bouquet of yellow flowers and crying happy tears, was his mother, Linda.
"Ma!" Tristan shouted, completely dropping his suitcase handle.
He jogged forward, ignoring the flashing cameras around him. He ducked under the yellow security tape and threw his arms around his mother. Linda hugged him back so tightly that Tristan could barely breathe.
"My boy! My champion!" Linda cried, kissing his cheek over and over again. "I am so proud of you, anak! Look at you!"
"I am home, Ma," Tristan whispered, burying his face in her shoulder. He felt completely safe. He wasn't the Architect right now. He was just a son who had made his mother proud. "I missed you."
After a long moment, he pulled back. He turned to his right and looked at Claire.
Claire's eyes were shining with tears, but she had the biggest, most beautiful smile on her face. She didn't say a word. She just stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. Tristan wrapped his strong arms around her waist, lifting her feet slightly off the floor.
"You did it," Claire whispered into his ear. "I knew you could do it."
"Thank you for believing in me," Tristan replied softly, setting her down.
He unzipped his team jacket and reached into his pocket. He pulled out the two small paper boxes he had bought at the street market in Bangkok earlier that morning.
"I got something for both of you," Tristan said. He handed the first box to his mother.
Linda wiped her eyes and opened it carefully. She gasped when she saw the beautiful, deep blue Thai silk shawl with the gold thread. "Oh, Tristan... it is so beautiful! The fabric is so soft!"
"It reminded me of the team colors, but I wanted you to have it," Tristan smiled.
Then, he handed the second small box to Claire. She opened it and looked down at the simple, braided leather bracelet with the tiny silver elephant charm.
"The vendor told me the elephant with the raised trunk means good luck," Tristan explained, feeling slightly shy. "I wanted to bring you some luck, since you always give me so much of it."
"I absolutely love it," Claire beamed. She immediately put it on her wrist. "I am never taking it off."
Tristan looked around. His teammates were all experiencing the exact same happy moments.
Gab Lagman was lifting his tiny, crying mother completely off the floor while his father, who was almost as tall as Gab, was slapping his back proudly.
Joco Palencia was surrounded by his two younger sisters, who were trying to wear his heavy gold medal at the same time.
Marco Gumaba was posing for photos with his huge family, holding his gold medal up to the lights and flashing his signature Hollywood smile.
It was pure, chaotic, beautiful happiness.
But the quiet family moments could not last forever. The Philippine media was hungry for their heroes.
Suddenly, bright white television lights turned on, blindingly bright in the dim airport terminal. Three large camera crews carrying heavy equipment pushed their way to the front of the crowd. The logos on their microphones were very familiar to every Filipino: GMA 7, ABS-CBN 2, and TV5.
"Coach Baldomero! Tristan! Gab! Can we get a few minutes?" a reporter shouted over the noise.
Coach Baldomero gathered his players. "Alright boys, line up. Answer the questions clearly. Smile for the cameras."
Tristan, Gab, Joco, and Marco stood next to their coach. The reporters immediately shoved four different microphones toward their faces.
A female reporter from GMA 7 asked the first question. "Coach Baldomero, welcome back! The whole country watched that intense final game against Indonesia. How does it feel to step off the plane and see this incredible welcome from the Filipino people?"
Baldomero smiled warmly. "Thank you. It feels amazing. We were in a foreign country, playing against a very tough crowd. But every time we checked our phones or looked at the internet, we saw the millions of prayers and messages from the Philippines. This gold medal is not just for the fifteen players on the team. This gold medal belongs to every Filipino fan who supported us. It is good to be home."
A male reporter from ABS-CBN 2 quickly pushed his microphone toward Gab.
"Gab, you played the game of your life yesterday!" the reporter said excitedly. "You guarded a player who was much heavier and taller than you. People on social media are calling you the ultimate 'Wall' of Philippine basketball. How did you survive that physical third quarter?"
Gab chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. He was still not used to being on national television.
"Uh, thank you, sir," Gab said in his deep voice. "It was really painful, honestly. My body is still very sore today. But I just remembered what my teammates needed from me. They needed me to protect the paint. I didn't care how big Baskoro was. I just planted my feet and refused to move. It was pure heart and pure adrenaline. And a lot of trust in my brothers."
The reporters nodded, loving the honest answer.
Then, a veteran sports reporter from TV5 stepped forward. He looked directly at Tristan.
"Tristan Herrera," the reporter said, his voice serious. "Congratulations on the MVP award. We saw your interview in Bangkok last night. You made a very bold statement. You said you are coming for the U-18 Asian Cup, and then the World Cup. Now that you are back home, do you still stand by those words? Are we really ready to face the giants of China and Australia?"
The noisy crowd around them suddenly quieted down, waiting to hear what the captain had to say.
Tristan didn't blink. He looked straight into the camera lens with cold, calm confidence.
"Yes, sir. I stand by every single word," Tristan said clearly. "We did not train this hard just to be the best in Southeast Asia. We respect the tall teams in the Asian Cup. We know they are bigger than us. But basketball is not just about height. It is about speed, intelligence, and teamwork."
Tristan touched the gold medal on his chest.
"We are going to rest for three days," Tristan continued. "And then, we are going right back to the gym. We are going to run faster. We are going to shoot better. The U-18 Asian Cup is our next target, and we will not stop until we reach the World Cup. We promise to make the country proud again."
The crowd behind the barricades erupted into massive cheers.
"WOOOOOO!"
"THAT IS OUR CAPTAIN!"
"LABAN PILIPINAS!"
The reporters smiled, completely satisfied. They had their headline for the evening news. "Thank you, champions! Have a safe rest!" they said, packing up their heavy cameras and moving back.
With the media interviews finally finished, the team was allowed to leave the airport.
The national basketball federation had arranged for a fleet of large, comfortable service vans to take the players home, but many of the players decided to ride with their families instead.
Tristan walked his luggage cart toward his mother's small, reliable car parked in the airport parking lot. Claire walked right beside him, her hand holding his arm gently.
"Three days of rest," Coach Baldomero shouted from across the parking lot, pointing his finger at his players before getting into his own van. "Do not touch a basketball! Eat! Sleep! Let your muscles heal! I will see you all at the training facility on Thursday morning!"
"Yes, Coach!" the players shouted back.
Tristan turned to Joco and Gab, who were loading their bags into their respective cars nearby.
"Rest well, brothers," Tristan said, giving Joco a high-five and Gab a fist bump.
"You too, Cap," Joco smiled tiredly. "I am going to sleep for forty-eight hours straight."
"I am going to eat my mom's entire kitchen," Gab added with a loud laugh. "See you on Thursday."
Tristan opened the trunk of his mother's car. He carefully lifted his hard-shell suitcase, making sure not to drop it, and placed it safely inside. He put his carry-on backpack, which held his gold medal, on the back seat next to where he was going to sit.
Linda got into the driver's seat. Claire sat in the back with Tristan.
The car engine started, and they slowly drove out of the crowded airport parking lot, joining the heavy, slow-moving evening traffic of Metro Manila.
But for once, Tristan did not mind the terrible traffic. The red brake lights of the cars ahead of them looked almost peaceful. He leaned his tired head against the cool glass of the car window.
"Are you hungry, anak?" Linda asked from the front seat, looking at him through the rearview mirror. "I already cooked the beef sinigang you asked for. It is waiting hot on the stove."
Tristan's stomach instantly growled at the mention of his favorite food. "I am starving, Ma. Thai food is great, but nothing beats your cooking."
Claire laughed softly, resting her head against Tristan's strong shoulder. "You heard him, Tita Linda. Drive fast, the MVP needs his soup!"
Tristan closed his eyes. The gentle hum of the car engine, the soft air conditioning, the smell of Claire's perfume, and the promise of a warm home-cooked meal surrounded him.
He opened his blue interface one last time for the day.
[System Status: Rest Mode Confirmed.]
[Mission: Southeast Asia Conquest - Completed.]
[Next Objective: U-18 Asian Cup. Countdown: 3 Days until Training Phase begins.]
Tristan smiled and mentally shut the interface off. He didn't need the System right now. For the next three days, he wasn't going to be the Architect. He wasn't going to calculate shooting percentages or analyze defensive rotations.
He was just going to be Tristan Herrera. A boy who had achieved his dream, sitting in the back of a car with the people he loved most in the world, heading home.
The real war against the giants of Asia was waiting for them on the horizon. But tonight, there was only peace, joy, and the beautiful, heavy weight of pure gold.
