Chapter 45: An Important Lesson For My Disciple

Shen Qingxue hesitated for a few moments, watching the trees pass by, before turning her head toward me.

"Husband," she asked softly, her obsidian eyes searching my face beneath her sheer veil. "Earlier, when you allowed me to charge down the ridge, you placed a strict condition on my blade, forbidding me from taking a single life. Did you impose that rule from the very start because you wanted to teach me this lesson?"

I glanced at her, letting out a quiet, knowing chuckle. "What do you think? Tell me what you actually learned from that clearing."

Qingxue fell silent, chewing over the question with deep, solemn focus. She stared down at her calloused palms resting on the leather reins, mentally replaying every second of the encounter, from her righteous fury atop the ridge to the horrifying revelation of the empty cages and the hidden Qi Condensation cultivator.

"I learned... that I must never judge a situation purely by its surface appearance or my first emotional impulse," she said slowly, her voice soft with humility. "When I saw thirty armed men swinging blades at defenseless wagons, my hatred blinded me. I assumed they were ravenous beasts pillaging innocent merchants, and my instinct was to draw steel and butcher them all. If you had not bound my blade with that command, Master... I would have ruthlessly slaughtered thirty innocent men who were bleeding to rescue their enslaved kin."

She took a shuddering breath, her eyelashes fluttering with lingering guilt.

"And if I had killed them," she continued, "the imperial cultivator hiding in the cart would have remained untouched. The underground tunnels would have been discovered, the escaping captives would have been recaptured or slaughtered in the dark, and I would have become the butcher’s greatest accomplice while foolishly believing I was upholding justice."

Looking at her bowed head and the sincere remorse in her eyes, a surge of genuine pride warmed my chest.

"Very good," I nodded approvingly, reaching across the gap between our saddles to give her cheek a gentle, reassuring pinch through the thin silk of her veil.

"A sharp sword is useless if the hand wielding it is blind. In the cultivation world, the greatest killers do not wear blood-soaked rags, they wear golden scholar robes, smile warmly, and offer you cups of poisoned spirit tea. If you charge into every conflict on raw righteous anger, you will end up as a pawn in someone else’s board. How will you approach such matters in the future?"

Qingxue looked up, meeting my gaze with complete clarity.

"In the future, I will temper my impulses and sharpen my observation," she stated firmly, her spine straightening with renewed resolve. "I will inspect the ground, evaluate the motives of every player, and uncover the truth beneath the veil before I commit my blade. I will never allow my passions to outrun my eyes again."

"Smart girl," I laughed, retracting my hand with a satisfied grin. "Your Asura Dao Heart gives you absolute courage in battle, but pairing that courage with a calculating mind is what will keep you alive when you face the true monsters of the Eastern Wilderness."

A faint, blooming blush crept across Qingxue’s ears under my praise. She lowered her head, a sweet, admiring smile curving her lips beneath the sheer fabric.

"Even so, husband... it was truly incredible how you saw through the entire scheme from several hundred yards away," she murmurred, her voice filled with open adoration. "You deduced the tunnels, the hidden cultivator, and the slavers’ motives in the span of a single breath."

"Experience, little wildcat," I shrugged casually, rolling my shoulders as our warhorses navigated a rocky stream bed. "When you’ve lived as long as I have, you see through mortal tricks like clear spring water. Arrogance and greed always leave behind the same predictable tracks."

I turned my head slightly, projecting my voice toward the front of the group where Tie Shan was limping alongside our mounts.

"Though, Leader Tie," I called out, my tone carrying a dry, amused edge. "When we reach your mountain, you had better drill your men on basic battlefield discipline. Do you know one of the primary reasons I knew your squad wasn’t an ordinary bandit gang?"

Tie Shan slowed his pace, looking back over his shoulder with an embarrassed, scratching grin. "This lowly one is ignorant. Please enlighten us, Senior."

"Bandits are greedy, filthy vultures," I said, pointing a finger at his surviving fighters. "They swing their blades with wild, unhinged malice because they want gold, liquor, and blood. Yet when your men rushed those caravan guards, eighty percent of them fought with gritted teeth and closed eyes. Their strikes lacked genuine killing intent, they aimed to disarm, to push back, and to pin down. Not a single one of your boys went for a fatal throat-slit when an escort fell. True cutthroats would have hacked those guards to pieces within five seconds. You masquerade as bloodthirsty outlaws, but your men carry the soft hearts of desperate village farmers."

Tie Shan let out a bitter, self-deprecating chuckle, lowering his head in rueful agreement.

"Senior’s divine eyes miss nothing," the burly leader sighed, shaking his head. "We are not hardened killers by trade. Most of the men in our stronghold were honest woodcutters, hunters, and border militia from the neighboring valleys. But with the famine, the exorbitant imperial tithes, and the rampant abductions carried out by corrupt magistrates, we had no choice but to pick up rusty blades and hide in the crags. We lack experienced warriors, so I had to make do with green boys whose hands tremble when they draw blood. I will take Senior’s words to heart and forge them into real steel."

"Good," I nodded, leaning back in my saddle as the dense pine forest began to give way to towering, jagged limestone cliffs looming against the twilight sky. "Now that the lessons are over, satisfy my curiosity, Leader Tie. What is the full story behind this slave convoy, and who exactly is running this butcher shop in the shadows?"
