Chapter 94: Ch 94: Reconnaissance Mission?"

The morning sun rose over the majestic spires of Olympus, casting a shimmering hue of rose and gold across the city. Below the imperial palace, the grand thoroughfares were already humming with activity. Yet, beneath the vibrant surface of the capital, an unmistakable tension hung in the air. News of the sky turning a bruised, violent purple the previous evening had spread like wildfire. The common citizens whispered in hushed tones, while the guild masters and high-ranking lords of the lower districts nervously assembled outside the high gates, desperate for an audience with their Emperor.

Inside the palace council chamber, a massive circular table made of dark obsidian dominated the room. Surrounding it were the high commanders of the Verdian Empire.

At the head of the table sat Raidan. He wore simple, dark velvet robes trimmed with imperial gold, a stark contrast to the heavy armor worn by his generals. His golden eyes were calm, yet the sheer, suffocating presence he projected made it difficult for anyone in the room to maintain direct eye contact for long.

To his right sat Naida, her white hair braided intricately, her radiant presence serving as a soothing counterweight to Raidan's intense aura. To his left stood Kael, back on his feet thanks to the restorative magic of the grand clerics, though his posture remained slightly stiff under his newly forged obsidian plate mail.

"Our scouts from the border watchtowers have confirmed it," Commander Vance began, unrolling a detailed parchment map across the dark stone table. Vance was a veteran warrior with a scarred jaw, overseeing the empire's eastern defensive lines. "The ancient dragon Ignis was seen flying high over the jagged peaks of the Southern Ridge before vanishing into the cloud banks heading toward the eastern expanse."

"And the Eastern Expanse leads directly to the toxic marshlands," Kael added, his voice low and solemn. "To the borders of the Serpent Kingdom."

"Precisely," Vance said, placing a heavy bronze marker over the mapped region of the eastern swamps. "Reports state that the moment Ignis passed near their outer territories, the sky flared crimson. The entire serpentine vanguard mobilized within hours. They have locked down their borders and raised their legendary Jade Barrier. They know a calamity is moving, but they do not yet know why."

A heavy silence fell over the chamber. The commanders knew the reputation of the Serpent Kingdom. It was an ancient empire, vast and insular, ruled by the mysterious World Serpent and governed by ruthless houses of cold-blooded scaled nobility. While Raidan had crushed their local guild syndicate within Olympus months ago, fighting their full military force on their home turf in the poison-choked eastern marshes was a terrifying prospect.

Raidan leaned forward, resting his elbows on the obsidian table and lacing his fingers together.

"They locked their borders out of fear," Raidan spoke softly, his voice carrying that strange, multi-layered draconic resonance. "They believe Ignis is a rogue storm passing over their lands. They do not realize that the dragon's path was predetermined, nor do they suspect that the true vanguard of their destruction will come from the west."

"My Lord," Lord Gerald, the minister of logistics, ventured carefully. "Our armies have just finished consolidating control over the central trade routes. Moving a full force into the toxic swamps would require months of preparation. The poisonous mist alone would dissolve standard foot soldiers before they even reached the first jade spire. Furthermore, the Architects of the Heavens will surely strike back after the failed attempt by their assassins."

"The Architects will not strike immediately," Raidan countered smoothly. "Their Silent Eradicators were sent to eliminate an anomaly in secret. Because one returned alive with my message, their high council will be locked in debate. They are arrogant creatures who rely on absolute order. When an anomaly defies their laws and survives their quiet executions, they stall while re-evaluating the risk. We have a narrow window of opportunity."

He stood up, his tall frame instantly drawing every eye in the room. The air temperature in the chamber rose by a subtle degree as his primordial power stirred.

"We will not march a massive, sluggish army through the toxic marshes," Raidan declared. "A traditional campaign is precisely what the Serpent Kingdom expects. They rely on their poisonous environment to wear down invading forces. Instead, we will strike with absolute precision."

He looked directly at Vance and Gerald.

"Minister Gerald, you will begin immediate production of high-grade fire-resistant and poison-neutralizing alchemy potions. Mobilize every alchemist in the city. Commander Vance, pull our elite vanguard regiments back to the inner citadel. They are not to deploy to the borders. They will train here until I give the command."

"Understood, Your Imperial Majesty," both men responded in unison, bowing deeply.

"What of the council of guild leaders waiting outside the gate?" Naida asked softly, placing a gentle hand on his arm. "They are terrified, Raidan. They need to know their Emperor has everything under control."

Raidan looked down at Naida, his harsh expression softening slightly. "Then let us give them a show of strength."

Ten minutes later, Raidan stepped out onto the high balcony of the imperial palace, overlooking the vast plaza below. Thousands of citizens, guild members, and merchant lords had gathered, their murmurs creating a distant ocean of sound.

As Raidan appeared at the marble railing, a wave of sudden silence washed over the crowd. The sheer weight of his presence was felt even at the very back of the courtyard.

Raidan did not use an amplifying magic artifact. He simply raised his hand, channeling a tiny fraction of his five hundred thousand mana points into his voice.

"Citizens of Olympus," his voice boomed across the city, clear and resounding, echoing off the distant mountains like thunder. "You felt the ground shake. You saw the sky burn. You wonder if the world is collapsing around us."

He paused, letting his burning golden eyes sweep over the sea of faces below.

"I tell you today, the world is not collapsing. It is being reshaped. For too long, the people of the lower districts have lived in the shadow of distant entities who view us as mere pawns. For too long, ancient superpowers have dictated our fate from behind their walls."

He raised his right hand, unleashing a concentrated beam of brilliant golden flame straight into the sky. The beam pierced the clouds, scattering the overcast gloom and illuminating the entire city in a warm, dazzling radiance. The sheer heat of the flame carried no malice, only pure, untamed majesty.

The crowd gasped in absolute awe, many falling to their knees as the majestic display bathed Olympus in light.

"The Verdian Empire bows to no god, no serpent, and no weaver of fate," Raidan proclaimed, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "Our future belongs to us. Stand firm, work hard, and fear nothing. Your Emperor holds the power to burn down any threat that dares to cross our borders."

A deafening cheer erupted from the plaza below. The fear that had gripped the city only hours prior vanished, replaced by an intoxicating, collective pride. The people shouted his name, their voices rising in a single, unified chorus that shook the very air.

Raidan stepped back from the railing, letting the curtain fall behind him. The cold, calculating smile returned to his face.

Naida watched him from the doorway of the balcony, her eyes filled with a mix of admiration and deep concern. "You played them masterfully. They would follow you into the abyss now."

"They will need that faith in the days to come," Raidan replied, walking back into the quiet hallway. "Because when we strike the Serpent Kingdom, the ground will shake far worse than it did yesterday."

He turned to Kael, who was waiting in the corridor.

"Kael, gather the Shadow Vanguard. Select twenty of our most powerful spatial mages and covert operatives. Meets me in the subterranean vault in one hour."

"My Lord?" Kael asked, his hand resting on the hilt of his spear. "Are we conducting a reconnaissance mission?"

Raidan's golden eyes flared with dangerous amusement.

"No," Raidan answered, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "We are going to plant the seeds of their collapse before our main force even sets foot in the swamp."

Kael bowed his head, accepting the command without hesitation. "It shall be done, Your Imperial Majesty." He turned on his heel and strode down the vaulted corridor, his heavy armor clanking against the marble floor as he went to mobilize the elite unit.

Raidan watched him leave before turning back to Naida. He reached out, gently cupping her face. The primordial heat beneath his skin had settled into a steady, soothing warmth that no longer threatened to singe her silver gown.

"You worry too much, my light," he said softly.

"I worry because I know the true cost of war," Naida replied, leaning into his touch while searching his golden eyes. "The Serpent Kingdom is old. Their subterranean roots run deep, and their venomous grand dukes have slaughtered entire legions with mere whispers of ancient curse magic."

"Then they will learn that curses mean nothing to a wildfire," Raidan murmured.

An hour later, Raidan descended into the subterranean vault deep beneath the palace. The colossal chamber was carved directly from ancient basalt bedrock and reinforced with glowing purple runes of spatial stabilization.

Twenty figures stood waiting in absolute silence. They wore pitch-black leather woven with phantom silk, their faces concealed beneath dark hoods. Each member was an elite operative, capable of stepping through shadows without leaving a trace of mana.

As Raidan stepped onto the central stone platform, the spatial runes beneath his boots groaned under the weight of his primordial presence.

"Shadow Vanguard," Raidan spoke, his voice cutting through the damp stillness like a honed blade. "The Serpent Kingdom believes their toxic borders make them unassailable. Tonight, we breach their domain."
